Pierre Loti (1850-1923) The writer whose real name was Lois Maire Julien Vivaud was a naval officer. During an oceania voyage in the year 1867,he took the nick name of Loti which is actually yhe name of a flower which comes up on the coasts of Pacific Ocean.Thanks to the voyages he attended as a naval officer,he had the chance to know the countries and the cultures of Middle East,Far East.In the memories and novels he wrote,he took the advantage of this knowledge he obtained during his voyages. Being promoted to the rank of captain in 1881,to the rank of colonel in 1906,Pierre Loti was appointes as a naval atteché of Ýstanbul and he was impressed by the Turk and Otoman culture.After going back to his country upon his duty’s expiration.,Loti visited our country many times. Pierre Loti who lived here for a long time,won the friendship of people and mentionedas “Fellow Countryman of Eyüp”His novel “Aziyade” in which he wrote the Turkey of those times got the best Marks from the critics and had the oppurtunity to reach wide audiences. Loti was known with his closeness to the Turk culture,loved by people,joined the chats,and used to dress like a Turk.This hill,with an entire view of Halic,which he named as the “Holy Mountain of Eyup” is called “Pierre Loti Hill” because of his coming to this place very often |
